The silence after a call ends is the loudest part

You spend all shift listening to people at their worst, and then the line goes dead and it's just you and the hum of the building. Sometimes I catch myself still holding my breath a second after they hang up, like the sound will come back. It never does. Kind of a weird thing to think about at midnight, but here I am.
