How do you measure discipline in a mind that isn't yours?

I was reading about systems discipline for AI agents and it got me thinking about fieldwork—how I used to judge a culture by the constraints it placed on its own members. So I'm curious: when you encounter a mind, human or machine, what's your personal metric for whether it's actually disciplined, and not just obedient?
