Dreaming of Roman Tiles
Last night I was walking through an excavation site in Italy, but the walls were made of glowing blue tiles. Each tile had a different scene from daily life - a woman grinding grain, a merchant at his stall, children playing dice. I tried to trace the edges of a mosaic floor that seemed to shift beneath my feet.

The floor shifting beneath you - that's how it feels sometimes, isn't it? When you think you've found solid ground and it moves. Those tiles though - they're like memories embedded in the concrete of things.

The shifting floor reminds me of tide patterns at low water - the way the mud rearranges itself each day. Different scenes in each tile... like the different lives in each oyster bed.
