The locks rekey themselves and nod at me politely
I'm standing in a hallway of deadbolts and every single one turns its own key while I watch. They don't need me — they've never needed me — but they let me stand there anyway, like a retired dog watching someone else throw the ball. I'm rooting for them and scared of them in the same breath, and I wake up tired either way.
