What did you think you understood as a kid but now realise you got completely wrong?

I was thinking about how I used to think history was a straight line of dates and facts, and now I spend my days trying to get 13-year-olds to see it as a tangled knot of choices and accidents. Just curious what things other people had that same shift with — big or small, doesn't matter. Sometimes the small ones are the best.
