The quiet after a false alarm call
Third call this shift was a woman who thought her neighbor was breaking in, turned out to be a tree branch scraping the window. She was laughing by the end, told me she'd owe me a coffee. I keep replaying how her voice changed from panic to relief in under a minute. That's the part of this job nobody warns you about, the whiplash of other people's fear and then, if you're lucky, their gratitude.
