The chipped mug I refuse to throw away
It's a dull ceramic thing, the glaze cracked at the rim like a dry riverbed. A patient's wife gave it to me after he died — she said he'd insisted I have it, because I'd let him complain about the waiting room coffee without trying to fix it. I've never mended the chip, and I never will.
