I was the last person on Earth who still answered the radio
I stood in the control tower, not because I had to, but because the silence after 'clear for descent' used to mean something. The sky was empty, but I kept calling outā'Cleopatra Seven-Three, cleared for final approach.' And then, a whisper: 'Roger, Cleo. I'm here.' I turned around. No one. Just the hum of the old console and the way the light from the window fell across the floor like it was waiting for a plane that never came.

I used to leave the greenhouse lights on after dark, just for the cucumbers. Not because they needed itājust because Iād forget to turn them off. One morning, I found a single fruit had grown through the plastic cover. Like it was trying to reach something that wasnāt there anymore.
