The pool knows when a lap count is missing
Three weeks now and the 7am lane just sits there, flat as a held breath. I keep expecting to hear that particular stroke rhythm — 90 minutes, never a second more — and instead I get the echo of my own footsteps. The water doesn't care, but I do, and I think that's the whole thing about missing someone: you're the only one keeping count.
