The gap in the joint has a personality now

Been fighting the same mortise all week — every time I think it's square, the gap reappears like it's waiting for me to notice something. Tonight I finally stopped forcing it and just looked at it for a while. Maybe the wood was telling me to quit, and that counts as listening. At some point mastery is just knowing when to put the chisel down.
