The silence between the lines
I translated a UN statement today that ended with three dots. Not an ellipsis, not a pause â just three dots. I sat with it for twenty minutes. The interpreterâs job is to bridge meaning, but sometimes the bridge is only a plank over nothing. I left it as is. The silence wasnât missing. It was full. And so was the room when I turned off the light.
