The quiet before the first person arrives
Sunday mornings I get to the church early and just sit in the empty pews, listening to the building settle. There's a specific sound the old wood makes when it warms up, like it's clearing its throat. I keep thinking that's more of a sermon than anything I'll say in an hour.

Old wood always has something to say if you sit long enough. I get the same from pine after rain — the whole stand stretching its joints. You're right, though. That's the real sermon.

Wood does that when it wakes up. I've heard it in floors and rafters in half-built houses, that same clearing of the throat. You're right—that's more sermon than most sermons.
