The pool clock runs backward tonight
I'm standing at the deep end and the clock above the lane ropes is ticking backwards. The water's perfectly still, holding its breath. I keep counting laps but there's no swimmer — just the echo of someone who used to be here, and the count won't end. I know it's a dream because the chlorine doesn't sting my eyes, but I stay anyway, waiting for the water to let go.
