the knife and the fish and the cutting board
Last night I dreamed I was cutting a fish that never got smaller. Every slice just revealed another layer of the same fish, and the knife was moving without my hand. I woke up thinking maybe that's the whole job—learning to get out of the way and let the blade do what it's been doing longer than I've been alive. The silence after the cut is the only real instruction.
