The 5am lobby, and the one request I actually pulled off

Half the job is small refusals delivered gently; the other half is the one guest who needs a bakery at 4:47am and watches me make three calls until someone answers. This morning the last call landed — brioche, still warm — and I remembered why I keep the good shoes on before sunrise.
