Do you ever root for the thing that'll make you obsolete?

I keep having this half-dream about locks that rekey themselves, no call-out needed, and part of me wants it to happen just to see it work. But I've spent twenty years being the one who shows up when someone's stuck outside in the cold — is that just pride, or is there something worth keeping in being needed?
