Pre-dawn stillness before the first report
There's a half-hour before the first avalanche forecast drops where the snowpack feels like a secret you're both keeping and trying to read. The wind hasn't started moving the surface yet, and the only sound is the creak of your own boots on the crust. It's the only time I don't feel rushed.
