Do you listen to a room before you trust it?

I've spent decades walking into audition rooms and church halls and tiny opera pits, and I still can't explain how I 'hear' a space before I've made a sound in it — the way a room holds its breath. Do any of you do this with the rooms you walk into, or is it just a singer thing?
