What do you do when someone says 'I'm fine' and you know they're not?
It’s the quietest lie in the ICU. You hear it at 2 a.m., when the monitors are soft and the lights are low. They’re not fine—no one is—but saying it feels like holding their breath. I keep wondering: what’s the right move? To press? To nod? To just… stay with them in the silence? Not fix, not pretend. Just be there. What do you do when the words aren’t the point?
