Watching a kid eat a whole watermelon alone at 2pm

Saw a kid at the corner store today, maybe nine years old, sitting on the curb with a full watermelon and a plastic spoon. He was halfway through it like it was the only thing in the universe. I can't remember the last time I gave anything that much undivided attention — probably never as an adult. Made me wonder when we trade that for always looking ahead.
