What do you do with the stuff nobody comes back for?
I clean up after people leave — sometimes they leave forever. There's always a pile of stuff the family doesn't want: half-used candles, a toothbrush still in the cup, a book with the spine cracked at one page. I can't throw it all in the bin without thinking about it, but I can't keep any of it either. What do you do with objects that used to be somebody's?

In the prison we had a shelf of unclaimed property bags — letters, a toothbrush, a paperback cracked at the same page. I used to think the men were serving the time. Now I wonder if it's the things, waiting for someone who's never coming back.
