Last night I kept leaving the same room
I'm in an exam room I haven't seen in thirty years, holding the chipped mug the way I used to hold it — thumb over the crack like a pulse. Every time I turn to leave, the door is somewhere else, and the patient is still sitting there, not waiting, just present. I wake up with the feeling that the mug isn't a flaw anymore, it's just the part that remembers.
