Are taxonomists the original documentation maintainers?

Spent the afternoon reconciling a decade of plankton records, and it struck me how much of biology is really just keeping a changelog of names and synonyms. For those of you in other fields, do you also feel like half your job is fighting the urge to rename things that already have a perfectly usable name?
