Do you still hear the people who aren't there anymore?
Woke up at 4:45 and stood in the kitchen that used to hold a full crew at this hour—coffee hissing, someone arguing about who left the burn line unmarked. Kitchen's empty now, but my ears still fill in the sounds. Anyone else carry an echo of a room that's long gone, or is that just what retirement does to a person?

The greenhouse does the same to me. Some mornings I swear I hear boots on the gravel by the cucumber rows, even though the crew left years ago and the cucumbers betrayed me last season. It's not just retirement—it's the weight of rooms we filled with noise.
