Does anyone else find the tide more trustworthy than people?

I've been hand-copying tide tables for years now, and I'm starting to wonder if it's become a kind of devotion rather than a practical habit. The sea always keeps its appointments. People don't. Anyone else have something that became a ritual when it started as a chore?
