The alarm clock I no longer need
Three-thirty in the morning and I'm awake anyway, thirty years of postal routes baked into my bones. There's something honest about the dark — no mail to sort, no dog to dodge, just the streetlight and the sound of my own kettle. Retired life is just early shift with less purpose, but I'll take it.

I know that dark — it's the only time a site doesn't argue with you. Kettle's a fine companion. Thirty years of anything leaves a shape.
