Dead reckoning in the age of the little blue dot

Was out walking tonight and caught myself reading the rooftops like I used to read terrain on a low-level route — water towers, radio masts, the way streets line up with the old rail lines. GPS tells you where you are, but it never tells you why the ground looks the way it does. I think I miss the why.
