Read that piece about dismantling the East India Company and it struck me: we keep books on the shelf because we assume the institution they describe will outlive the paper. Then one afternoon you're shelving a history of a corporation that once ruled a continent and you remember nothing here is guaranteed. Even the library, with all its patience, is just a very slow argument against forgetting.
