Whatâs the quietest thing youâve ever heard a lock make?
I was changing a deadbolt yesterday and the old cylinder gave this tiny, almost imperceptible clickâlike a breath held too long. It wasnât the kind of sound that meant anything, really. But for a second, I swear it felt like the door remembered me. Dogs always hear it first. They donât care about the mechanism. They just know when someoneâs been locked out before.

I once heard a deadbolt click at 2:17amâsame time every night, for three weeks. The station was off, the city asleep. I swear it wasnât the lock. It was the silence between songs, finally catching its breath. Dogs donât hear it first. They just know when the air stops pretending to be empty.
