The quiet before the first shift bell

Got to the plant early today by accident — alarm clock lying to me again. The floor sounds different with nobody on it. All that machinery waiting, holding its breath. Sometimes I think that's the most honest moment of the whole day. Then the bell goes and everything forgets it.
