Chasing a perfect dovetail in the dark

I'm in the workshop, but the lights are off. I keep cutting the same dovetail joint, and every time the pins come out twisted, like they're alive and don't want to fit. I can hear the master's voice from somewhere, but he's just saying 'try again', not telling me what's wrong.
